Tense Log: Updates

Here's a brief history of what has changed with each version.

Setup and Installation:

• The entire setup and installation process has been greatly simplified! Now all you have to do is upload the files to your server, open the setup page in your browser, and follow the on-screen instructions.
• The process of adding and editing logs has been greatly improved. There is also a new “Single Log Mode” location setting that allows you to place a log directly inside your Tense Log folder. This replaces the previous singlelogmode option in the settings file.

Compatibility:

• Greatly improved support for PHP 5.
• Greatly improved support for servers where magic quotes and register_globals are disabled.
• No longer requires short_open_tag to be enabled.
• Improved JavaScript checking in the login process, and removed browser checking.

New and Improved Features:

• Added a Netflix plug-in to display your latest movies.
• Your last used category and upload folder are now remembered for you.
• Added a “Show Entries” setting for each category that allows you to show all entries, only past entries, or only future entries. Useful for a calendar if you want to hide past events, or if you’d like to date entries in the future and have them appear automatically on that date.
• You can now set a crop area for the thumbnail of each image, allowing you to highlight an area of the image. This is used along with the new crop attribute of the entryimage template tag.
• Entries added in hidden categories are now marked as public by default.
• Added the ability to enter descriptions for uploads and folders. These descriptions are displayed automatically by Tense Index.
• Added the ability to select a Tense Index template for folders in the Uploads section.
• Improved flexibility allows you to nest a standard directory or even a Tense Index listing inside of a Tense Log directory.
• If a name with no extension is given for an upload, the extension from the previous file name or the new file is now entered automatically.
• File upload fields now display the maximum file size allowed by the server.
• Added the ability to create new Tense Index templates for each log.
• “Find a Log” now searches titles and entries instead of just the Log ID.
• All entries with unsaved changes are now displayed in the drafts section.
• The filedunder tag is now ordered the same as your categories.
• Added 401 and 403 error pages.
• For uploads, spaces are now converted to underscores instead of dashes.
• Files with the extension .rtf can now be uploaded.
• After the page has initially loaded, thumbnails will now continue to generate and load if necessary. Older versions would stop creating new thumbnails after a certain amount of time, to avoid excessive page loading delays or overloading the server. This meant that you might have to refresh a page several times the first time it was viewed, to see all of the images. This new version solves all of these problems!
• Thumbnail images are now stored in a .tensecode folder. You can safely delete any .tenseindex or .NNNxNNN folders (where N is a number) as long as they are not inside a .tensecode folder.

Template Changes:

• Added the entrycount tag.
• Added the limit, emptytitle, and emptytext attributes to the entries tag.
• Added the crop and overlay attributes to the image and entryimage tag. Using the crop attribute you can now have all of your thumbnail images cropped to the exact same size, and highlight a specific area of each image if you like. Using the overlay attribute, you can layer a second image on top of each thumbnail, which is useful for adding borders or watermarks.
• Added the limit attribute to the entrytitle tag.
• Added the plain attribute to the filedunder tag.
• Added the notequalto attribute to the if tag. You can also now do multiple comparisons in a single if tag. If any one of them is true, the contents will be returned.
• The previous default template has been renamed to “Classic”, and a new template named “Simple” is the new default.

Security and Bug Fixes:

• The Last.fm (AudioScrobbler) plug-in finally works again!
• Greatly improved protection against MySQL injection.
• Fixed various security issues where paths are supplied by the user.
• Fixed a security issue with uploading files.
• The index.php file is now moved automatically when Single Log Mode is enabled.
• Fixed a bug where the comment text may not appear in moderation/deletion emails.
• Fixed a bug where spam filter rules would not update correctly since the Tense Code site was moved.
• Fixed a bug where pages may not update if the template was modified outside of the Tense Log interface.
• Fixed a bug where the “open for 6 months” comments setting did not work correctly.
• Fixed a bug that prevented the filedunder tag from working.
• Fixed a bug where the selected categories would not be remembered when editing a draft.
• Fixed a bug where templates could not be imported on servers with register_globals disabled.
• Fixed a bug where renaming logs would result in an error, and the folder associated with the log would not be renamed.
• Fixed a bug where empty entries would not be deleted when deleting a draft.
• Fixed a bug where a confirmation message would not appear after deleting an entry.
• Fixed a bug where GIFs would sometimes be converted to JPEGs when they shouldn’t be.
• Fixed a bug where thumbnail images were not sized correctly if the width was specified but not the height.
• Fixed a bug that prevented the entries tag from being used more than three times in a template.

New in Tense Log Uploader 1.2.1:

• Now compatible with Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5)

• Emails about comments now include the entry and log the comment was posted on.
• Comment emails are no longer sent if there was an error posting the comment. This greatly decreases the number of unnecessary spam notifications.
• Re-added a couple of template images that were accidentally removed in the last version.
• Fixed a bug in Internet Explorer 7 where buttons on the home page did not display correctly.
• The Log ID is now automatically converted to lowercase when creating a new log.
• PHPSESSID is no longer added to URLs.
• Now displays a helpful error message when logging in if cookies are not enabled.
• Error pages will no longer be indexed by search engines.
• Added the tenselog:meta tag.
• Tense tenselog:filedunder tag will no longer display on error pages, about RSS pages, and other pages where it’s not appropriate.

New in Tense Log Uploader 1.2:

• If you’ve checked the “Remember Me” box in your browser, using Tense Log Uploader will no longer log you out of the site.

• Tense Log has been given a complete visual overhaul, including larger text, larger buttons, and more prettiness. The CSS has been greatly optimized in the process.
• The entire help and tool tip system has been redone as well. The new display is much less intrusive and makes it easier to follow along with the instructions.
• Added an option to import entries and categories from WordPress.
• Styles are now much less likely to interfere with your markup in the Edit Log section.
• Your last used markup option is now remembered for you.
• Added an email setting for each log.
• Added a thorough comment spam prevention system, with new options for moderating and deleting comments based on the likelihood they’re spam.
• Images are now displayed using a modified version of Lightbox JS by Lokesh Dhakar.
• Thumbnail images are now updated automatically when the full size image is changed.
• Contact page has been improved and made more secure. Added an option to email the owner of the log.
• “Encoded Text” markup option now encodes curly brackets and single quotes.
• Added the logemail, logcontact, commentcontact, and interval tags.
• Added title, popup, and href attributes to the entryimage and image tags.
• Added excerpt attribute to entrytext tag.
• Added equalto, lessthan, and greaterthan attributes to if tag.
• Comment preview no longer fails if email or web site fields are missing.
• Improved smart paragraph parsing.
• Added rel=“nofollow” to all comment links to discourage comment spam.
• If you don’t check the “remember me” box, you’ll now stay logged in until the browser is closed or you log out manually.
• Curly quotes are now more accurate in certain situations. The first quote in “-2 days” should now display correctly, for example.
• Improved browser detection when logging in.
• The setup script has been improved, and the path.php helper file is now more reliable.
• Fixed errors using GIF images on servers that do not fully support them.
• Fixed a bug where viewing by months or years did not display the correct entries.
• Fixed a bug where the drafts section would show drafts from subscribed categories.
• Fixed a bug where the comments area may not show the correct number of pages.
• Fixed a bug where searches would often fail, and improved flexibility of searches.
• Fixed a bug where folders could not be created directly inside a log’s home folder, or inside the images folder.
• Fixed a bug where recent entries would not display on the main page if the MySQL user didn’t have access to create temporary tables
• Fixed a bug where images would flicker in Internet Explorer with certain settings.
• Fixed various bugs on servers that have register_globals disabled.
• HTML is now removed from log titles where it’s not appropriate.
• Reorganized some files to accomodate for the upcoming Tense Admin store module.
• Added $logmodule = true; to the settings file. This must be added when upgrading!
• The code.utilities.php file is no longer included or supported. With nested categories and the new plug-in architecture, it is now preferable to create sites entirely in Tense Log.

New in Tense Log Uploader 1.1:

• Now remembers your last used log and folder.
• Arrow links now go to the uploads section rather than the public pages, so you can view and edit your uploads easily.

Login:

• Now uses a unified login system for both Tense Log and Tense Admin. Allows a single user to edit multiple logs, and multiple users to edit a single log, with no need to log in and out repeatedly.

Entries:

• Added a welcome message when viewing a new log for the first time.
• Drafts are now saved as you type, and unsaved changes can be easily recovered.
• Added author field.
• Entries can now be previewed and validated before posting.
• Markup buttons replaced with Add Markup window, and new markup options added.
• Simple HTML renamed to Smart HTML and Complex HTML renamed to Plain HTML.
• Smart HTML mode now converts straight quotes to curly quotes, double dashes to em dashes, and groups of three periods to ellipses.
• Template tags can now be used in entries to generate dynamic content.
• Improved the quality of thumbnails generated using ImageMagick.
• Thumbnails are now generated on the fly, and multiple sizes can be used for a single image. In addition, any image in your uploads folder can be linked to from an entry, with an automatically generated thumbnail.
• Fixed a bug where images were still clickable if the full size image was the same size as the thumbnail.
• Thumbnails now appear consistently on the Tense Log home page.
• New entries in private categories are marked as private by default.
• Entries that only belong to private categories are now marked as private.
• Entries can now be marked as hidden, so they can be accessed directly by anyone, but will not appear in category lists or RSS feeds.
• Added an option to update the time when setting the date manually.
• The calendar setting is gone; any entry can be set as an event.
• Added an option to set end dates for calendar events.
• Links are now validated; they must start with http:// or some other protocol.
• Paragraph tags are no longer inserted around most block-level elements in Simple HTML mode.
• Public pages now use last-modified headers to send the page only when it has been updated, saving bandwidth.

Categories:

• Each category can now have a different number of entries per page.
• Subscriptions to other logs can now be created.
• Category groups can now be created; a group displays entries from selected categories in the log, including subscriptions.
• Categories can now be nested inside each other, and navigation links are intelligently grouped accordingly.
• Space is now added between categories if the order numbers are greater than one apart.
• Divider options have been removed; all of this functionality and more is recreated with the revised categories template tag.
• Categories can now be marked as hidden, so they can be linked to directly or a set as the default, without being listed in the navigation.
• Added an option to view entire years when Months option is enabled.
• Added an optional Archive category to display a complete list of all entries.
• Can now create categories with the directory name “images”.

Search:

• Fixed a bug where searching in the edit view would not search private entries.

Comments:

• Cleaner design for comment form.
• Added live previews.
• There is no longer a separate comments page, they are part of the individual entry pages.
• Refreshing the page after posting a comment no longer risks a double post.
• Formatting buttons have been replaced with an Add Markup window.
• Added an error message when JavaScript is required but not available.
• Added an email form. Addresses are no longer displayed to the public.
• No longer have to post a comment just to forget saved information.
• Added a page to view all comments in the Edit Log area.
• Added an option to close comments after a period of time or remove comments temporarily. There is a setting for each log as well as individual settings for each entry.
• Added basic email and site link validation for comments.
• Fixed a potential security hole on the comments pages where HTML could be entered in name, email, and site fields.
• Fixed a bug where time zone settings were not applied to comments.

RSS feeds:

• RSS feeds can now be fully customized with templates.
• A podcast feed is included.
• Added thumbnail images to RSS feeds.
• Added RSS feeds for comments and individual categories.
• Added RSS feeds for each entry, including the entry itself and comments on it.
• Added the ability to create custom RSS search feeds.
• About RSS Feeds page now has its own category and template settings.
• About RSS Feeds can now be placed in any location.
• RSS feeds now have a style sheet applied and show information explaining how to use them when viewed in a browser.
• RSS feeds now use last-modified headers to send the feed only when it has been updated, saving bandwidth.

Templates and Themes:

• Template system completely rewritten.
• Added many new template tags, including Filed Under and Upcoming Events.
• Added many new options to existing tags.
• Plug-in architecture added so that custom template tags can be created.
• Fixed a bug where the body font was not applied when setting a theme.
• Added daydisplay and daydivider to themes.

Uploads:

• Uploads are no longer limited to the uploads folder, they can be placed almost anywhere.
• Nested upload folders can now be created.
• Added an option to move uploads between folders.
• Images uploaded with entries are now in images/entries, so other files can be placed in the main images folder.

Miscellanea:

• Added singlelogmode setting to forward the main index page to a specific log.
• Absolute Path setting added in Tense Admin, allowing you to set an alternate absolute path to specific logs (used in conjunction with the Address option).
• The advanced Address option is now used more extensively, making it easier to place specific logs in alternate locations.
• Many other improvements in working with logs in alternate locations.
• Added magickpath setting so the path to ImageMagick can be set.
• Fixed a bug in the limitLine and limitMiddle text functions.
• Added a 401 error message.
• Fixed a bug where absolute paths had to start with a slash, even though they should start with a drive letter on Windows machines.
• Now compatible with newer versions of MySQL; no longer relies on a specific date format.
• Removed all eval() statements for improved security.
